The urban experience of Ultimo is marred by intense traffic, conflicts in use and scale and a sense of placelessness-a difficult urban domain to navigate. This exhibition by students in the Masters of Architecture at UTS suggests that Ultimo could be transformed into a vibrant and sustainable place for tourists, students, residential and business communities alike.

Led by local architects Adam Russell and Simeon King, and with an intensive workshop by the New York-based urban designer Brian McGrath, the students used video cameras and GPS tracking devices to record and analyse the existing urban experience. Key stakeholders also outlined their understanding of local issues. Students responded with urban strategies for the Ultimo precinct that improve the built environment, connectivity and quality of life. Each strategy has a unique urban engagement and transformation agenda that are brought together in diverse and coincident architectural proposals.

The resulting projects are provocative and opportunistic. They include new buildings and small ephemeral structures, street upgrades and media sites. These are posed as a counterpoint to traditional top-down planning regimes where architecture submits to an overarching organisational order. Here the emphasis is on projects that are resilient to change while at the same time capable of adaptation. The work in this exhibition is parof a larger research grant between UTS academics in the Schools of Architecture and Sport, Leisure and Tourism.
